New Zealand is home to some weirdly wonderful plant and animal species, and it’s only been recently that I have discovered many of them. After finding out about the leatherback turtle (an ancient, giant sea turtle that migrates to New Zealand waters) I started researching our wildlife and became utterly fascinated with it.
One mushroom jumped out at me with its brilliant blue-ness: the entoloma hochstetteri. This fungi has also been found in India, but I chose it because it’s beautiful, unique – and rather overlooked.
That’s what Blue Mushroom Books is about. We’re celebrating the little guys, finding wonder in the ordinary, and digging deep into New Zealand’s natural history through the eyes of New Zealanders. Aotearoa is home to flora and fauna that can’t be found anywhere else in the world – that’s worth writing a book about.
